I figure with enough time and effort, anyone could be a System Administrator. Really, it’s not hard, it just takes practice, methodology, and trial and error. A lot of trial and error. These truths will certainly get you on your way. Let’s get started.

On last Friday, I held a “bookclub” meeting with Prof Ng et al. I learnt from him about a strategy: 3-by-4.

The 3-by-4 means that, take 3 time a week, spend 4 hours consecutively to do one thing. He said, many many one-hour slot cannot make any use. A few long time slot, however, can let you concentrate and do something great.

Acid-free paper is made of a basic (pH >= 7) pulp which means it is acid-free. This kind of paper will not degrade in air or heat and hence it is preserved longer.

To import old mails to Gmail is easy: Search on Google and you will find a bunch of importer such as GML. However, recently I search again, somebody tells that there is a import feature from Google finally.

However, I do realize how I can get a good grade: In general, I can get an A easily in a 1000-level course, but I am unable to get anything more than a B- in a 3000-level. In 4000-level I can get B+ but I can only get an A in 5000-level.

Google's China Problem (and China's Google Problem)

By CLIVE THOMPSON

Published: April 23, 2006

For many young people in China, Kai-Fu Lee is a celebrity. Not quite on the level of a movie star like Edison Chen or the singers in the boy band F4, but for a 44-year-old computer scientist who invariably appears in a somber dark suit, he can really draw a crowd. When Lee, the new head of operations for Google in China, gave a lecture at one Chinese unive…

Firstly, whenever it is not English in the id3 “artist” and “title” field of a MP3, it shows a mess on the screen when you play it. It is not a matter on the display algorithm but I think it is just a bug that Nokia needs to fix. The solution for that…

The development of a protocol has so many things to concern and that’s far too different from the theoretical analysis. I was going to implement the admission control protocol in NS2, but as I get into the coding, I firstly found too little understanding about the NS2 system, then found the protocol in my mind is not fully grown, then found the implementation quite buggy. Skip list is a data structure that happens to do similar work as a tree. However, to make a tree optimized for searching, it has to be balanced and balancing is a cost. Skip list, however, does not enforce balancing but make the “tree” probabilistically balanced.

Sometimes ago, I was updating my Palm with my JPilot and then tried to hotsync back to the device. However, I failed -- the connection is not working.

Because I hasn’t hotsync for long, hence I have no idea when was my last success. I guess the failure was due to the updated kernel, but I am not sure, and no time to fix it. But after a while, I figured out that the problem might be the USB cable -- since I’ve also tried to use the attached memory stick as a mass storage.

Steve Jobs說，你得找出你愛的 (You’ve got to find what you love.)

In Debian system, it is quite easy for you to do the transition, except you have to do some manual moving of files, but that’s relatively easy. However, as Mozilla suite is one application and Thunderbird and Firefox are separate, they are not by-default interoperable.

The title of the talk is “A New Way to look at Networking”. Insightful. He said, the development of TCP/IP is to replace what telco network can’t do, namely, to remove the constrain of link route. So TCP/IP can survive even when part of the route between is broken --- because we have a lot of replacements automatically by design. However, the current TCP/IP network and the telco network are both conversational network, which dea…
